Act 1 |
Scene 5 |
| |
|
Lovers meet - at a picnic deep in the woods.
They are both sitting down. |
| |
Dangerfield |
(Far stage left - Hidden in the woods) Caw, Caw (pause)
Caw, Caw |
| |
Virginia |
(Center stage - hidden in the woods) (she wishtles in response)
(Dangerfield pokes his head out of the bushes and she comes out of the bushes
with a picnic basket in hand) |
| |
Dangerfield |
(laughing) You still whistle like a girl! |
| |
Virginia |
...and you still sound like a wounded crow! |
| |
Dangerfield |
(taking a peek in the basket. He reaches in) Whew,
enough chicken here to start another farm!) (She smacks his hand away) |
| |
Virginia |
That's not the way to have a picnic. Remember when
your mama would bring us kids up here to play? The first thing she
would do is spread a blanket or something on the ground, lay the food out
and call us over to eat. |
| |
Dangerfield |
Well, we don't have a blanket but will this do? ( He takes
his coat off and spreads it on the ground) How did you sneak past
your Pa? |
| |
Virginia |
Sneakin' past Pa was easy (Spreading the food out) Getting
away from that filty old sherriff was something else! |
| |
Dangerfield |
(concerned) Did he hurt you? |
| |
Virginia |
Naw...He's too old to catch me. (Laughing) |
| |
Dangerfield |
Be careful around that old man! You know the story
as good as I do. |
| |
Virginia |
...that he once grabbed your mother? (Tenderly)
Dangerfiled, you know that's just talk. It didn't really happin'.
|
| |
Dangerfield |
Just the same, you'd better be careful. |
| |
Virginia |
I saw your mother today. I told here that I had seen
you and that you were all right. I also told her about your Capt'n Brown.
You know, I heard about him up North. After what he did in Kansas
some folks says he's the most famous abolitionist in the country!
They say he wants to start slave revolts all over the south. I don't
know what he's doin' here in Harper's Ferry and I don't want to know.
But you be careful. |
| |
Dangerfield |
You heard a log in that school up North! (Picks up one of
her books) Uncle Tom's Cabin. Hmmm...college (standing) I would give
anything to learn all those things that they teach. |
| |
Virginia |
(standing) I know you want your freedom and I guess if I
was you, I'd want it too, but if you stayed around I'd teach you all I know
- just like before. |
| |
Dangerfield |
I'd like that. |
| |
Viriginia |
I'd like that too...uh...I mean...You should have a change
to learn as much as you can. |
| |
Dangerfield |
(walking around looking at the forest)...and I think I'm
going to miss this forest, this beautiful smell of the trees, and (turning
around he found himself face to face with Virginia) I'll miss..you. |
| |
|
(They kiss and embrace) |
| |
|
(blackout) |
