There
are several thousand versions of the Last Supper. They range from European
depictions during the Middle Ages and Renaissance to modern injection of
contemporary values and struggles. But none were suppressed and rediscovered
by accident. The story of this picture comes from background investigation
from a movie made by nuns called "Beneath the Veil".
There was a flood in a section of the catacombs near the Vatican.
The good nuns, both Franciscan and Dominican, were sent to clean up.
Being very thorough in cleaning the floor they notice tar on a nearby wall
and scrubbed the tar away revealing this painting. To their amasement
they discovered images of women. They brought their video camaras
down and filmed this painting in detail and along with the story of Pope
Joan included it in the movie. There are elements of transition from
Medieval to Renaissance style This version
of the Last Supper precedes Leonoardo DaVinci. |
