A Remote Possibility
       by Sean November 2006

Dr. Hernandez was brain surgeon who loved to tinker in his own studio.  He and his
friend Tim Sabotinsky, an electric engineer, designed a total security system for
his mansion.  It was all to fit in a remote .  The garage, car, TV and Internet were
the first circuits to be wired.  But that was just the beginning.  The lights for Christmas,
bedroom surveillance for his new baby were next.  In all 40 buttons were tested and
worked fine on the eve of thanksgiving.   The remote was to be a stocking stuffer Christmas
gift for his wife and  older 16 year old daughter who was the babysitter for the rest of
  the eight  children.
But Dr. Hernandez had not counted on Jewel Williams.   The Dr. and his wife Gloria
invited seven different families over for Thanksgiving.  Jewel was among them.  She
was a very curious 11 month old baby that never understood that there were places she
should not go.  She loved to dip her fingers in toilet boils, pull down boxes full of toys and
open doors, rip out pages in a twenty pound dictionary and play in closets.
Jewel's grandma was packing up a bag of things to take to the feast and
she did not see Jewel grab the old remote of a TV that had been recycled a year ago.
Jewel decided to drop the useless remote in the bag. It was unnoticed. One of her favorite
things to do was to click buttons.  She had used the "live" remote once and loved to turn up the
volume and watch her mom and dad run and find the remote which she had dropped
behind the coach.    Now the "live" remote in Jewel's house was put in a child safe place
  above the TV.
Well you guessed it.  The good doctor picked up Jewel and was showing her around his
studio and he got an urgent cell phone call on a surgery update scheduled for the next day.
He let Jewel down on the floor and she grabbed the remote and left the room to drop it in
her grandma's bag.   Jewel's grandma had seen her drop in the remote and took out the other
remote and gave it back to Jewel.  Gleefully Jewel went back to the doctor;s studio and put the
useless remote back on the doctor's table. Unfortunately the doctor had not seen Jewel switch
the remotes.  This is not a remote possibility as you will soon see.
Lucky or not Dr. Hernandez lived two houses down from Jewel's house.  That night Jewel
took the remote and threw it in her crib to add it to the music button toys and stuffed
animals.   Now 11 month old's wake up at various unpredictable times at night.  Jewel was
teething and she liked to chew on things to help relieve the pain.  She started to chew on her new find.
Dr. Hernandez decided to leave early to go to the hospital to check on his new patient .
It was about 4 AM and he saw the Christmas lights go on and off twice and then his garage
door opened after he closed it.   He thought his children were playing and would talk to them sternly
when he got home for work.  He believed them when they denied playing.  After all there was
strong evidence that all were sound asleep.   He  tested his newly programmed remote
and found that nothing worked.  He checked the batteries and replaced them.  Nothing.
He schedule a meeting with Tim to review what had gone wrong. As they were opening
up the circuit board at 2 AM in the morning, the theft alarm went off and they couldn't shut it
down .  The police were called and were looking for burglers.  The police report concluded
that there was a potential burgler and theft of technical equipment.     A week later the police visited
all the members of the Thanksgiving party. They collected, marked and tested all 500 remotes
until they found that Jewel was culprit.
The doctor decided to put his high powered remote in a place where children would not have a
chance to play with it. Even though he had 9 children he had to relearn to baby proof his mansion.
All charges were dropped but it was the first time the police had a wrap sheet on a baby.
