You Are What You Eat

I’m told that you are what you eat,
And this made me think.
I thought about foods –
The legumes, the grains, the leaves,
The vegetables and fruits, and honey from bees,
The coffee, milk, and tea –syrup from trees,
The chicken, lamb, the pig, the steer,
The wine, the alcohol, and beer,
The dream, the words, the joyous laugh, the fear, the tear,
The sunshine, air, the fire and water - clear,
The chemicals, the sweet and sour,
The things, the sights, the sounds and smells - their power.

And I thought about thoughts, about life and communion
And the nourishment of love.

Then I began to wonder about feasting upon lovers,
Friends, and others,
And how devouring with mind and eyes,
Is deeper than any binding ties.

But sometimes when I’ve chocked on a tear,
With too much on my plate,
I’ve swallowed fear, or
I’ve retched up hate, or,
I’ve eaten my words – ingested fate.

So, green or ripe, fresh or leftover,
Stirred and whisked,
Baked, broiled, or fried,
With humility or pride,
You are what you eat from your head to your feet.
